SUMMARY:Dave Shrimpton: Searching for Alice
DESCRIPTION:Dave Shrimpton is a wet plate collodion photographer who uses vintage cameras to produce his art. He cites the work of Julia Margaret Cameron as his inspiration and says that upon viewing his first Cameron exhibition his “world changed for ever”.\nThis exhibition is entitled “Searching for Alice” and uses the image of Alice Liddell\, photographed by and friend of Julia Margaret Cameron\, as its point of departure. Being drawn into the world of Mrs Cameron through his own Muse\, Catarina Correia\, Dave’s work seeks to explore the results of the often unpredictable and unique wet collodion process. \nHe is thrilled to be displaying such a large body of his work in one place with many images not previously seen by a public audience. Dave will further follow in the creative footsteps of Mrs Cameron by photographing the current museum staff. The sitters for many of her iconic photographs were actually servants within the household staff at Dimbola. These priceless wet plates taken by Dave will form a further element to this already exciting and dynamic exhibition.

SUMMARY:Greg Douglass at Dimbola 6th October!
DESCRIPTION:After last year’s totally sold out appearance as the top Californian rock guitarist Greg Douglass- a key member of The Steve Miller Band – is returning on Sunday 6th October for another  “up close and intimate” gig.   \nTogether with his superb U.K band Greg will be presenting an evening dedicated to The Steve Miller Band’s many hits.   Greg co-wrote the hit “Jungle Love” which he performed on The Steve Miller Band’s “Book Of Dreams” album.  It later re-surfaced on the  “Steve Miller – Greatest Hits” 1974- 1978″ album – which has sold over FIFTEEN MILLION copies in the U.S.A. alone! Greg also contributed to songs on Steve Miller’s albums “Abracadabra” (including the title track-=  a number one single) and “Living In The Twentieth Century“. Not surprisingly Greg and  the rest of the band were  inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland\, Ohio in 2016. \n After “Abracadabra”\, “The Joker” is probably the best known Steve Miller Band song\, although “Rock’n Me’ topped the Charts\, “Fly Like an Eagle” was a million-selling single which reached number two\, “Jet Airliner” reached number eight\, whilst “Take The Money and Run” was also a top ten hit. \nGreg has also been a member of Van Morrison’s band\,  Janis Joplin’s band Big Brother & The Holding Company\, The Jefferson Airplane offshoot Hot Tuna\, and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Tom Fogerty’s band\, toured with r & b legend Bo Diddley.  As the guitarist with The Greg Kihn Band\, he recorded their  massive hit “Jeopardy”\, which reached number two on the U.S charts – only held back by from the number one spot by Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. \n Greg will be playing lead guitar\, fronting his very experienced U.K based band. Keyboard player Rob Beckinsale and bassist Steve Browning were members of the legendary San Francisco band It’s A Beautiful Day\, and appeared at The Isle Of Wight Festival with them. Steve was also a member of The Pretty Things\, together with Dick Taylor\, the first bass player for The Rolling Stones. SUMMARY:Lee Miller: Style is Strength
DESCRIPTION:1st February – 18th May \nFashion photographer Lee Miller captured the essence of women for magazines such as British and American Vogue.Living in war time Britain\, she turned her talents towards documenting the experience of women during the passage of World War II.On loan from Farley’s House\, Miller’s post-war Sussex home\, this exhibition shows wartime women as they have never been seen before. \nOf the photographs in the collection\, some evoke the urgency and resourcefulness of wartime Britain without being too explicit.In others\, though\, Miller does not disguise the wartime context of her work: defiantly\, models pose in front of the destruction inflicted by the devastating bombing raids of the Blitz. \nIn her piece ‘Check Mate’\, distributed in British Vogue in 1943\, Miller drew attention to the difficulties of publishing colour photography in wartime. Through ‘Hats Assignment’\, she urged the public to fight the war with fashion. \nThe Lee Miller collection on display at Dimbola until the 18th May showcases examples of her work from 1940-1944\, demonstrating the attitudes of women during WWII. Brought together\, Miller’s work will show how these women would not bow down to the harsh realities of war\, striving instead to maintain their feminine strength with pride.

SUMMARY:Marco Sanges: One Step Closer
DESCRIPTION:1st February – 18th May 2025 \nOne Step Closer by photographer Marco Sanges marks his exhibitionary debut at Dimbola. \nThe exhibition is on display alongside the work by legendary photographer\, Lee Miller. While their work stands eight decades apart\, both Miller and Sanges hold unique balances in their prolific portfolios between stunning portraiture and capturing moments of extreme crisis. \nOn having his work displayed at Dimbola\, Sanges expressed\, “Creating this project was a deeply spiritual experience comprised of intense emotions that were as contrastingly dark and light as the portraits themselves. I am honoured to see this new work alongside Lee Miller’s\, as our work runs in several parallels – both analogue photography with a similar language that emphasizes the noir beauty of black and white photography.” \nOne Step Closer uses the power of art and storytelling to enact change through an intimate series of portraits that capture paragons of film\, theatre\, music\, and literature. Some of the project’s participants include Bob Geldof\, Elizabeth McGovern\, Jeremy Irons\, Brian Cox\, Gyles Brandreth\, and Clare Balding. While resulting in dramatic\, narrative-based imagery\, the true aim of this initiative is to raise funds via auction for Under One Sky\, a London-based not-for-profit charity to set up to support the homeless community.As Sanges’ subjects take one step closer to the camera\, proceeds will help bring us all one step closer to ending homelessness. \nJulian Bell\, President of Dimbola\, and Brian Hinton\, the museum’s Director\, have expressed great excitement for this display. Bell describes Sanges’ images as “…collaborations in which the subject and the artist lean in together – closer and closer – to visualise that flame of fantasy within. The results are by turns rapturous\, hilarious and scary: often\, of their nature\, wildly melodramatic; in every case\, imprinted with the uniqueness of the sitter.” Bell and Hinton specialise in curating the best work at Dimbola\, maintaining the integrity and prestige of the museum’s catalogue to honour the memory of Julia Margaret Cameron\, a Victorian photography pioneer and former resident of the museum’s site. \nThis collaborative exhibit runs until 18 May\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Kathleen Holloway: Sea Change
DESCRIPTION:Kathleen Holloway is a multi-genre photographer whose images range from street photography\, still life\, and photo abstractions. She has studied at The International Center of Photography and Penumbra Foundation\, both in New York City\, as well as The Art Institute of Seattle in Washington state. \nAfter graduating\, she pursued a career as a photo editor in publishing and the entertainment industry. With an over 20 year career of hiring photographers\, producing photo shoots and as a retoucher\, Kathleen has moved on to the next phase of her career\, showing her own work. Recent solo exhibitions include Gallery 178 and The Dyckman Farmhouse Museum in 2023 both in Manhattan. Her work was also featured in NoMAA Women in the Heights: Dress at the NoMAA Gallery\, New York\,  was a selection for the 19th National Photography Competition at Fotofoto Gallery\, in Huntington\, NY\, and featured in the 20th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards for Women in Photography held at FotoNostrum Mediterranean House of Photography\, in Barcelona\, Spain. She is also a member of Soho Photo Gallery in New York City. \n“I’ve always had a love for art and photography\, since my father taught me the basics on his Pentax K1000 when I was a child. His experience and passion as a commercial artist encouraged me as I took my first steps to becoming a photographer. \nOver the last few years I have started experimenting with panoramic 35mm and medium format film photography and exploring historical printing techniques like cyanotype and platinum/palladium. I am continually interested in learning new ways to capture the world around us.” \nSea Change is a personal photo project inspired by her father-in-law’s love of sailing and his struggle with dementia. Photographing nautical items like fishing nets\, stony beaches\, and weathered ropes from around the shores of Britain\, she reflects each frame back to itself to reimagine patterns\, textures\, and colours making the familiar seem unfamiliar.  \n

DESCRIPTION:We are proud to present PUNK + a compelling exhibition showcasing a retrospective by acclaimed photographer Sheila Rock. From the raw energy of 1970s punk\, with iconic images of The Clash\, Siouxsie Sioux\, and Billy Idol\, to the polished pop aesthetics of the 1980s music scene. Also accompanying the exhibition are a selection of photographic portraits from the series entitled Tough and Tender\, that were made in seaside towns around England. Although initially interested in the aesthetics of seascapes when starting on this series\, Rock’s dignified and stoic portraits reflect a quiet politics\, documenting subjects and environments on the economic margins of the early 21st Century. \nSheila Rock came to the UK from America in 1970\, and began a series of successful careers; firstly as a primary documenter of the punk era\, then as a successful commercial photographer in advertising and editorial and more recently as the author of photographic books featuring works of her own private passions. The Face magazine launched her career\, and she later contributed to a variety of diverse titles including German Vogue\, Elle\, Glamour\, Architectural Digest\, Sunday Times\, Telegraph Magazine\, Brides\, Time Magazine and Rolling Stone Magazine. Her book PUNK +\, published in 2013\, is a document of the London 1970s punk scene that was also accompanied by a series of exhibitions in London\, Paris and Berlin and later\, Tokyo\, Shanghai\, Hong Kong and Singapore. Her book Tough & Tender is a delicate and sensitive report from the English seaside and 80s SOUND AND VISION published in 2022 is an overview of youth culture in the 80s featuring photographs from her days shooting for THE FACE magazine.  \nHer books Tough & Tender\, Young Punks and 80s Sounds and Vision will be available to purchase from the Dimbola gift shop. DESCRIPTION:Alan Edwards\, the godfather of British music PR\, who has worked with artists such as David Bowie\, the Spice Girls\, the Rolling Stones\, the Stranglers\, Prince and Amy Winehouse\, is to give a talk at Dimbola on June 18th to launch his book ‘I Was There – Dispatches from a Life in Rock and Roll’. \nAlan’s company The Outside Organisation are PR for John Giddings’ artists\, including The Corrs\, who will be here for the Isle of Wight Festival that weekend\, and John has said he will attend the evening. DESCRIPTION:The Barry “The Fish” Melton Band are appearing at  Dimbola Museum & Galleries on SUNDAY 27th JULY – THIS IS NOT TO BE MISSED!!!!!  \nBarry “The Fish” Melton  was the co-founder of Country Joe and the Fish\, one of the most influential groups to come from the San Francisco scene. In May 1967\, their debut album\, “Electric Music For The Mind & Body”   was a chart success and  still consistently  appears  in  lists of the top psychedelic  albums ever made. It’s never been out of print. \nIn  1967 –  the “Summer of Love” –  Country Joe and the Fish played  the Monterey Pop Festival\,  as did The Who\, Jimi Hendrix\, Janis Joplin\, The Mamas and Papas\, Otis Redding\,  Simon and Garfunkel\, The Steve Miller Band and The Jefferson Airplane . After a superb performance they  were in great demand worldwide. Their most famous appearance was at 1969’s  historic Woodstock Festival when they played before a staggering HALF A MILLION people! \nAt Dimbola\,  Barry Melton will be on  lead guitar and vocals\, with Natalie Martel  from Canada and  Stephane Missri from Paris  on vocals and guitar too. On keyboards and occasional guitar and vocals we have Rob Beckinsale\, and on bass guitar Steve Browning\, an ex member of top U.K psychedelic rock band The Pretty Things. Steve and Rob have wowed  audiences at Dimbola before\, as part of Greg Douglass’ band – Greg was the guitarist for The Steve Miller Band. On drums will be  Bernie Fox\, who has toured with many American blues legends including Jimmy Witherspoon and Eric Bibb.  \nThis gig is NOT to be missed – they may not pass this way again!!! SUMMARY:Ice Cream Stories with Richelle Rich 7th August 2-4pm
DESCRIPTION:Artist Richelle Rich will be collecting stories from visitors in exchange for ice cream at Dimbola on the 7th August\nBritish urban legend has it that Margaret Thatcher\, prior to becoming Prime Minister\, worked on the emulsifier for soft serve ice cream. Iconic within popular culture and visual storytelling Rich uses the ice cream to create narratives exploring systems of power. Highlighting high and low culture\, who is included and who is left behind\, the ice cream facilitates a deep interrogation into people\, place\, class\, and the politics of nostalgia. Since 2023 Richelle Rich has created numerous participatory performances in the US and UK\, sharing soft serve ice cream with the public in exchange for stories that are documented on handwritten postcards\, video\, and with a vintage Polaroid camera.\nThe ice cream becomes a memory machine\, provoking deeply personal stories of love\, regret and belonging. These ever expanding narratives utilise the specific to expose the universal experience and the fallibility of memory. Rich exposes her Polaroid films to security x rays on her travels increasing the fragility of an already unpredictable medium. \nI wonder about Lady Thatcher’s hair and if it was an Elnett infused fire\nhazard as she lent over\, warming her test tubes on her bunsen burner\,\nand working out that perfect ratio of air and oil and sugar that would\nmake ice cream taste creamy with the minimal use of cows\, and would\nfeed a million holiday makers lying oiled and sandy next to bright striped\nwindbreaks\, canvas deck chair seats puffed into little arcs by the wind\nbelow flapping Union Jack flags.\nI’m thinking about damp gritty bikini gussets. Sand in sticky crevices.\n‘Kiss Me Quick’. Bumper Cars. Two little ducks.\nTongues sticky from stamps pressed on seaside postcards home.\nCandy floss fingers writing ‘Wish you were here’.\nRR \nRichelle Rich is a British/Swiss artist born in London in 1967. She received her MA from the Royal College of Art in London 1997\, and a BA (1st) from Central St Martins in 1995. She moved from London to California 12 years ago and now lives and works in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree\, with her musician husband\, Harry Waters\, and their two teenage sons. \nRich is the creator and curator of The Art House JT in Joshua Tree\, a creative retreat\, domestic exhibition and residency space in the remote desert of Joshua Tree\, as well as the editor of The Ice Cream Stories Substack and The Art House Files newsletter. \n\nHer work has been exhibited internationally\, including shows at SPRING/BREAK Art Show (New York)\, Hirschl Contemporary (London)\, Michael West Gallery (Isle of Wight)\, Standpoint Gallery (London)\, The Royal Academy (London)\, NCK Gdansk (Warsaw)\, and Soft Core LA (Los Angeles) among many others. She is a published writer and the winner of the Augustus Martin Prize\, Falkiner Fine Paper Award\, and was shortlisted for FACK Arts Prize. DESCRIPTION:The sights and sounds of the original Isle of Wight Festival will be brought back to life with a string of events over the August Bank Holiday. \nRay Foulk\, co-promoter of the 1970 event at Afton\, will return to the Island with a new book to celebrate the milestone 55th anniversary of the legendary gathering that saw rock legends Jimi Hendrix\, The Doors and The Who take to the stage at Afton.  \nAn estimated 600\,000 people showed up to that record-breaking event which was subsequently preserved on film as well as on many records and CDs. Hundreds of thousands of music fans continue to return to the Island every year for the 21st Century version of the Isle of Wight Festival in Newport\, an event which is viewed on TV around the world. \nRay Foulk’s updated edition of The Last Great Event\, published byMedina Publishing\, tells the full insider story of the 1970 festival\, which had to overcome fierce local objections to take place. In new chapters for 2025\, he explores the enduring legacy that continues to this day with the new Isle of Wight Festivals. The new and expanded paperback edition was published last month\, headed by Peter Harrigan who was publicity director of the 1970 festival and the Bob Dylan one a year previously. Also included are more than 50 photographs taken at the more recent Isle of Wight Festivals\, courtesy of Isle of Wight Festival director John Giddings. SUMMARY:David Tunnicliffe:The Road to Palmyra & Travels with a Tangerine
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to present two stunning exhibitions by David Tunnicliffe\, showcasing black and white photographs taken during his travels in the Middle East. In a career spanning over forty years\, David’s work as a diplomat and an academic took him to the far corners of the earth\, giving him access to unique photographic opportunities denied to many. \nThe Road to Palmyra\nDavid’s striking images of Palmyra were taken during a visit to Syria in 1993\, making them a crucial document in preserving the history of one of the “seven wonders of the Middle East”\, and showcasing the magnificence and beauty of this grand city in the desert. In the 1st century BCE\, the oasis city of Palmyra\, in the centre of modern Syria\, was on the main trade route between the Levant and Mesopotamia. Palmyra was incorporated into the Roman Empire during the reign of Tiberius\, eventually becoming a luxurious stop and trading station on the Silk Road. In the 20th century\, the ruins of ancient Palmyra were carefully preserved and restored\, becoming a favoured destination for modern explorers and seasoned travellers\, away from the beaten track of the tourist trail. Tragically\, in 2015 the city became the target of ISIS\, who decimated the ancient towers\, museums and theatres\, turning them to rubble\, and killing the proud custodians of the city\, increasing the importance of David’s images as a lasting reminder of what has been lost. \nTravels With A Tangerine\nTaking his inspiration from Ibn Battuta\, a 14th century traveller\, David began his worldwide travels in India in 1967\, taking his camera to Africa\, Asia\, Europe and the Americas\, capturing his own photographic record of the places he visited and the people he met. Ibn Battuta was a Magrebhi scholar\, who began a 30 year spiritual journey in 1325\, covering over 75\,000 miles\, and recording his experiences in a travel memoir known as the Rihla.Ibn Battuta’s Rihla remains a leading source of contemporary knowledge about the areas he visited\, and today his memory is still honoured in the name of  modern-day Tangier’s international airport. This beautiful and powerful exhibition represents a mere fraction of the tens\, if not hundreds\, of thousands of images taken by David during his own Rihla\, with the title of the exhibition playfully referring to Ibn Battuta’s Moroccan origins. \nAbout the photographer\nIn a career spanning more than 30 years his photographic archive holds a vast collection of images from almost every corner of the world. His experience in the diplomatic\, commercial and academic worlds have given him unique access to photographic opportunities denied to many. He has taught photography in Ethiopia\, Australia\, Saudi Arabia\, Somalia\, Egypt and in the UK and has a wealth of experience working with museums and international universities on everything from Third Century BC artifacts in Egypt and Neolithic Man in Somalia to reclaiming photographic prints from WWII in Australia.\n \ndavidtunnicliffephotography.co.uk

DESCRIPTION:Interested in developing your skills in studio photography and film developing? Join us at Dimbola for a FREE workshop with professional photographer George Budden. Experiment with studio lighting with digital cameras\, then dive into film photography and learn to develop your own shots \nThere will be demo on studio lighting from George\, learning about the various lighting modifiers\, backdrops\, and equipment including light meters and flash syncs. Then there will be time to practise with digital cameras and a still life scene to get an idea of how the lighting works and the various modifiers. \nFor the second part of the workshop\, you will learn to load 35mm and 120mm black and white film into various cameras\, and then experiment with digital and film cameras on models as well as still life scenes. You will then learn to load film canisters and develop film. \nThis free workshop is for 14-25 year olds and has been organised by Brave Island\, Support with travel costs to Dimbola if needed.  \nYou don’t need to bring your own camera but feel free to if you prefer. DESCRIPTION:During the latter part of 2024 Annabel joined Dr Bob Seely on several trips to Ukraine to take photographs for his book describing in detail the now 20 year campaign waged by Putin to bring Ukraine back under Russian control. \nTogether they met and interviewed the brave young men and women taking part in the country’s relentless war effort to prevent this from happening. \nThough many were military personnel before the war\, it was both fascinating and humbling to discover the varied professions that so many others had given up in order to defend the sovereignty of their country. Ordinary people living ordinary lives\, now joined together to protect their very way of life. \nAmongst those they met chefs\, city councillors\, film producers\, website designers\, teachers\, lawyers\, photographers\, musicians\, retired grandparents and so many more. \nA small selection of this striking photographers on our display in our back corridor\, behind our giftshop and is free to browse. \nWe plan to showcase a larger selection later in the year.

SUMMARY:Eavesdropping on the Otherworld - Syd Wytch
DESCRIPTION:14th March – 7th June \nEavesdropping on the Other World will be on display in the Studio Gallery and features new work by local photographer and artist Syd Buron. \n“I am honoured to once again be exhibiting in the room\, which was once Julia Margaret Cameron’s Studio\,” \nThe exhibition includes paintings\, most produced during his residency at Ventnor Botanic Garden — alongside works by other visionary artists that have inspired him. His focus is on psychedelic depictions of folklore\, creating a visual companion to today’s thriving “acid folk” contemporary music scene. \nReturning to the darkroom\, Buron has also produced photographic works on the backs of theatre light lenses. Mounted in circular wooden frames and illuminated from behind\, they appear like glowing portholes into another world. \nDimbola is delighted to welcome Syd back. He first exhibited at the gallery in 2014 in the tearoom and more recently in 2023 in the studio gallery. SUMMARY:Dreams - Yana Barabash
DESCRIPTION:14th March – 7th June \nThree and a half years ago\, Yana and her mother fled the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, leaving their home in Odesa and settled in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. \nOriginally from Odesa\, Yana received her formal training at the Kostandi Art School and the Grekov Odesa State Art College. Painting has been part of her life since childhood\, and oil remains her primary medium for its depth\, flexibility and capacity for refined detail. \nOver the years she has held numerous exhibitions in museums and galleries in Ukraine\, Spain\, London and on the Island. In 2025 she was a winner in the prestigious ‘UK Women in Art’ show at Roundhouse\, London in 2025. \nThis exhibition holds special significance for Yana. During her first visit to Dimbola\, encountering the photographs of Julia Margaret Cameron felt like a quiet dialogue across time. The mystical atmosphere and emotional depth of Cameron’s work resonate with Yana’s own search for inner presence and atmosphere. The light of Freshwater\, the sea and the landscape of the Isle of Wight form an environment that feels both intimate and powerful. \nThe exhibition brings together several groups of Yana’s works created in England. Some respond directly to the Island and its surroundings. Others continue her long-standing practice of portraiture and figurative scenes drawn from personal life. The central body of work explores minerals\, trees and flowers. \nIn recent years Yana has turned toward elemental forms — stone\, roots\, petals — as a way of seeking stability and harmony. Minerals inspire her through their structure and depth; old trees become symbols of endurance and grounding; flowers\, often intertwined with female figures\, suggest delicacy\, vulnerability and inner strength.Through these works\, she searches for balance\, stillness and a sense of rootedness in an unsettled world. \nThe work is for sale\, please enquire at the front desk. \nyanabarabash.com

DESCRIPTION:Jimi and Friends” (Part Two) to celebrate The Pretty Things and the spirit of the Isle of Wight Festivals at Dimbola \nWe are turning back the clock once again this spring with the return of Jimi and Friends (Part Two) – a special live music eventcelebrating The Pretty Things and the legendary atmosphere of the 1969 and 1970 Isle of Wight Festivals. \nFollowing a sell-out show last November\, the much-anticipated follow-up takes place on Friday 17th April promising another unforgettable evening of live music\, nostalgia and festival spirit in one of the Island’s most iconic cultural venues. \nHeadlining the night are Big Red & The Cava Boys\, joined by special guest Dick Taylor -founding member of The Pretty Things and former bassist with The Rolling Stones – along with Angelina Grimshaw and Jo Larcombe. \nThe evening will feature a two-part seated performance\, beginning at 6.30pm (doors open at 6pm). The first half will showcase songs of The Pretty Things from 1963 to 1969\, while the second half will celebrate music associated with the 1969 and 1970 Isle of Wight Festivals\, featuring numbers made famous by artists including Jimi Hendrix\, The Doors\, Bob Dylan\, Joni Mitchell\, Joan Baez and more. \nThe event also serves as a pre-launch celebration for Dimbola’s forthcoming exhibition\, “Jimi Hendrix at Afton\, 1970”\, which will open in our former bookshop space at the end of May. \nDr Brian Hinton\, Executive Chairman says: “This promises to be a wonderful evening of outstanding live music\, nostalgia and atmosphere. It’s a fitting way to celebrate Jimi Hendrix’s legacy and the Isle of Wight’s extraordinary musical heritage\, while buildingexcitement for our forthcoming exhibition.” \nGuests are warmly encouraged to embrace the spirit of the era and come dressed in their favourite 1960s and 70s festival-inspired fashion. \nThe gig will take place in our tearoom and the bar will be open to purchase drinks.
