SUMMARY:Folktastic Isle
DESCRIPTION:New Carnival takes Island folklore on tour this autumn with National Lottery Heritage funding \nNew Carnival presents Folktastic Isle\, an exhibition exploring the Isle of Wight’s folk heritage\, the art of the people\, celebrating the everyday stories\, traditions and cultural heritage that make the Isle of Wight unique. \nFor two years\, New Carnival has been uncovering fascinating Island folklore\, from Morris dancing and its links to the suffragettes\, to the lost town of Wolverton\, the Blackgang and Chale Giant\, the Island’s Bull or ‘Giltern Beast’\, Jack-in-the-Green parades\, and even the history of doughnuts! \nAmong the discoveries is the remarkable story that one of the earliest written versions of The Three Little Pigs is associated with Merrie Gardens in Shanklin. \nThe new funding enables Folktastic Isle to tour three Island locations in autumn 2026. A new Folktastic Isle Folk Map\, illustrated by local artist Katy Rose\, will highlight stories\, traditions and places across the Island\, encourages people to explore familiar landscapes with fresh eyes. \nThe free exhibition combines historic photographs\, literature and creative work with replica heritage objects created in partnership with the Isle of Wight Heritage Service. These include a Roman bronze enamel ‘running hare’ brooch\, recreated by local jeweller Sophie Honeybourne\, and the mysterious Neolithic flint tribratch\, possibly an early symbol of Island identity\, replicated by expert flint knapper Will Lord. \nStorytelling\, workshops and educational resources accompany the exhibition. \nFolktastic Isle also forms part of New Carnival’s involvement in the Arts Council-funded CAN YOU HEAR US? Island cultural celebration. \nThe small exhibition consists of exhibits on display on the ground floor at Dimbola Museum & Galleries and is free to view. \nHannah Ray\, Director of New Carnival\, says: \n“It’s always exciting to discover more people\, places and stories connected to the Island. The more we explore and talk to people\, the more we find – and the project just keeps growing! \n“We hope to create a children’s book of Island folk stories. The Literary Trust has offered to fund printed copies for every Island school if we can raise the money to produce it\, so we’d love to hear from anyone who could help make this happen\, or if you are able to contribute via our local giving page.” \nIsle of Wight College Folktastic shows/performances \nSunday 13 September\, 2.30–3.30pm\nVentnor Exchange Arena\, Victoria Recreation Ground\, Newport \nSaturday 26 September\, 6.30–8pm\nFreshwater Memorial Hall\, Freshwater \nSunday 18 October\, 2.30–3.30pm\nVentnor Exchange Arena\, Browns Golf Course\, Sandown \nFolktastic Exhibition \n8–16 September – 10-4pm Lord Louis Library\, Newport \n21 September–4 October 10-4pm– Dimbola Museum and Galleries\, Freshwater \n10–18 October – 10-4pm Graft Studios\, Sandown \nMagic\, Mystery and HMS Eurydice \nNew Carnival and the Shipwreck Museum will present a family-friendly magic show exploring the history and ghost stories of HMS Eurydice. Maritime expert and magician Ian Vallance will be joined by eyewitness Gary Ranson. \nSaturday 12 September\, 1–2pm – Lord Louis Library \nFriday 2 October\, 7–8pm – Dimbola Museum and Galleries \nSaturday 10 October\, 7–8pm – Graft Studios \nAll events free to attend but booking advisable as limited numbers in some venues. \nClick Here To Book \n‘Folktastic Isle’ is part of Past Futures\, a project led by Creative Island and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Foundation\, made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nThank you to Creative Island\, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation and The National Lottery Heritage Fund for supporting New Carnival’s Folktastic Isle. \nFor more information\, visit newcarnival.co.uk\,  newcarnival.co.uk/other-projects-2

SUMMARY:WI Photography - “People at Work”
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s Institute has grown into the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK\, boasting roughly 205\,000 members across 6\,500 individual institutes. The IOW Federation of WIs has over 900 members\, belonging to 27 WIs across the Island. The Arts & Leisure group is open to all their IOW members and offers a variety of different activities\, including a successful photography section. For the past three years they have organised a photo competition for all their WI members\, steadily attracting a growing number of entries each year. \nTo celebrate 111 years of the WI on September 16th this year\, they originally chose ‘Women at Work’ as the theme. However\, they thought it more appropriate in 2026 to widen the theme to include both men and women. So the photos in the exhibition display working roles portrayed by both sexes. You will see everything from street musicians to a coffee barista! \nTo find out more about the IOW WI\, please see their website

SUMMARY:An Evening celebrating Frankie Miller
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday 29th August for a special evening celebrating Frankie’s life\, music and enduring legacy. \nFew singers have earned the admiration of fellow musicians quite like Frankie Miller. Praised by legends including Rod Stewart\, Ray Charles\, Bonnie Raitt and the Eagles\, the Scottish singer-songwriter was blessed with one of the most distinctive voices in rock and blues. Frankie is sadly unable to attend because of the devastating brain haemorrhage he suffered in 1994\, which left him unable to perform. However\, those who knew him best will ensure his story is told with warmth\, affection and honesty. The centrepiece of the evening will be an ‘In Conversation’ between Frankie’s close friend and biographer\, Davy Arthur\, and acclaimed sculptor and broadcaster Guy Portelli. \nDavy has known Frankie for decades and has written two books about his life and career. Together\, he and Guy will share personal memories\, little-known stories and insights into the man behind some of Britain’s finest songs\, offering audiences a rare glimpse into the humour\, talent and generosity that made Frankie so loved by everyone who met him. \nMusic will\, of course\, be at the heart of the evening\, and the Island’s legendary guitarist Dick Taylor – a founding member of The Pretty Things and former member of The Rolling Stones – will accompany acclaimed vocalist Jo Larcombe\, to perform a selection of Frankie’s best-loved songs. Together they will bring the music back to life in what promises to be an emotional and unforgettable tribute. \nDr Brian Hinton\, Exec Chair of Julia Margaret Cameron Trust says ” Frankie Miller’s time in the spotlight was brief but explosive\, one of the greatest soul singers of his time\, now cruelly retired from active service. But his legacy shines bright!” \nThe evening starts at 6.30pm (doors 6pm) includes a 20 minute interval and finishes at approximately 8.45pm. Drinks will be available to buy from our special bar menu. There will be a book signing at the end of the evening by Davy Arthur. \nor fans of Frankie Miller\, classic rock\, great songwriting or simply wonderful stories from people who were there\, this promises to be a very special evening.

SUMMARY:A Pictorial History of the IOW Festival 1968 - 2009 By Gem Bell
DESCRIPTION:A vibrant exhibition showcasing a pictorial of the IOW Festival 1968 – 2009 by the artist Gemma Bell (1979 – 2011). \nIn 2009 Gem was asked by Solo (organisers of the Isle of Wight Festival) to provide something to decorate their massive 15m x 25m V.I.P backstage tent. She set herself the challenge of creating a pictorial history of every major Isle of Wight Festival from 1968 to 2009. \nGem enjoyed combining a variety of methods to produce this body of work\, from traditional drawing and painting techniques to shooting digitally through old medium format camera bodies and blending layers through the use of modern applications. \nDrawing inspiration from festival posters\, tickets\, photographs and local memories\, Gem created works that celebrate both the history of the Isle of Wight Festival and the creative spirit that continues to define it. \nAlthough Gem Bell’s life was tragically cut short in 2011\, her work remains as powerful and relevant as ever. \nThe exhibition will be on display in the Studio Gallery at Dimbola. \nVisitors can also explore the museum’s renowned collections relating to the Isle of Wight Festivals along with the new Experience Hendrix exhibition and discover the Island’s rich cultural and musical heritage.
