DESCRIPTION:Dimbola Museum & Galleries are honoured that Iconic Images have kindly agreed to loan us photographs of David Bowie taken by the late Terry O’Neil left over from our Iconic Bowie exhibition is 2019. \nOver a 20-year period\, O’Neill captured Bowie’s shapeshifting artistry better than just about anybody else. \nO’Neill’s photographs have left such a lasting impression because he was able to demystify some of the 20th century’s biggest icons. \nBy the time O’Neill started shooting Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust tour in 1973\, he was much a respected name in photography. \nCurrently exclusive to Dimbola in the UK\, the limited edition images are available to purchase. DESCRIPTION:This summer we are proud to present a fascinating exhibition exploring the life\, work\, and lasting influence of one of Britain’s most celebrated literary figures. Best known today as the author of An Inspector Calls\, J.B. Priestley was far more than a playwright. Over the course of his remarkable career\, he wrote more than 100 books and established himself as a journalist\, broadcaster\, screenwriter\, social commentator\, critic\, essayist\, and campaigner. \nHis voice helped shape public debate throughout much of the twentieth century\, making him one of the most influential figures of his generation. \nFrom 1933 to 1959\, Priestley made his home on the Isle of Wight. During these years\, the island’s landscapes\, seascapes\, walks\, history\, and unique character became a profound source of inspiration for his writing and thinking. \nThis exhibition explores Priestley’s deep connection to the island while revealing the many facets of his extraordinary life and career. Through photographs\, documents\, personal stories\, and historical material\, visitors will discover why Priestley became a true “influencer” long before the age of social media\, and how his ideas continue to resonate today. \nThe exhibition offers a unique opportunity to learn more about a man whose influence extended far beyond literature and theatre\, and whose years on the Isle of Wight played a significant role in shaping his work. \n We are delighted to announce that the exhibition has been extended until 3rd January! SUMMARY:WI Photography - “People at Work”
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s Institute has grown into the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK\, boasting roughly 205\,000 members across 6\,500 individual institutes. The IOW Federation of WIs has over 900 members\, belonging to 27 WIs across the Island. The Arts & Leisure group is open to all their IOW members and offers a variety of different activities\, including a successful photography section. For the past three years they have organised a photo competition for all their WI members\, steadily attracting a growing number of entries each year. \nTo celebrate 111 years of the WI on September 16th this year\, they originally chose ‘Women at Work’ as the theme. However\, they thought it more appropriate in 2026 to widen the theme to include both men and women. So the photos in the exhibition display working roles portrayed by both sexes. SUMMARY:West Wight Portraits of a Landscape
DESCRIPTION:West Wight Portraits of a Landscape is a multi-sensory project exploring life in our home on the Isle of Wight through photographs\, sounds and shared stories. \nCelebrating both deep-rooted traditions and contemporary innovation\, the project tells the stories of people who live and work in connection with the land and sea. From beekeepers and farmers to artists\, hedge layers\, educators and maritime archaeologists\, these portraits reveal the many different ways people connect with the unique landscape of West Wight. \nUsing a distinctive multi-sensory approach\, the project weaves together powerful photographic portraits set within the landscape\, personal stories and sound recordings created through the everyday rhythms of people’s work and activities. Together\, these elements offer an intimate and evocative insight into our shared relationship with the West Wight environment. \nEarthMuseum is working in collaboration with two exciting Island-based artists: photographer Pete Johnstone and sound artist Nathan Holt. Pete has photographed 20 fascinating people connected with the land and sea who live and work in West Wight\, while Nathan has captured the sounds of everyday life\, including milking cows\, bees in hives\, bellringing\, charcoal making\, artists at work\, digging and poetry reading\, creating an immersive soundscape to accompany the photographic portraits. \nThe project has also engaged with the wider community. Janet Owen has worked with young learners in West Wight to explore the idea of sensory landscapes\, while more than 100 people have taken part in pop-up events\, sharing their own stories and connections to the area. \nAlongside the exhibition\, the project will include a digital map of portraits accompanied by new schools learning resource\, ‘Portraits of Your Landscape’ available through EarthMuseum Learn for students everywhere to enjoy. \nLocated in the heart of West Wight and once the home of pioneering photographic portraitist Julia Margaret Cameron and her famous Freshwater Circle\, Dimbola Museum & Galleries is a natural setting for the West Wight Portraits of a Landscape collection. \nWith Thanks \nThis project has been made possible by the generosity and support of many individuals and organisations.
